Home favorite Zheng Qinwen secured her spot in the last 16 of the Wuhan Open after a straight sets win against wild card Jaqueline Cristian on Wednesday.
The fifth-seeded Zheng, who reached the semi-finals in Beijing last week, showed resilience by winning three consecutive games after trailing 2-1 in the first set. She took control at 4-2 with a forehand winner, eventually claiming the first set 6-2, aided by an ace.
Cristian found her footing and broke Zheng to lead 3-1 in the second set. However, Zheng responded swiftly, breaking Cristian's serve to go up 3-2 with a backhand drop shot.
Dominating the next six games, Zheng secured a 6-2, 6-4 victory in an hour and 42 minutes. She will now face unseeded Leylah Fernandez in her quest for a spot in the quarterfinals.
