Paris 2024 Olympic Village Repurposes 16,000 Cardboard Beds for a Sustainable Future

The Paris 2024 Olympic Village is making headlines with its innovative approach to sustainability by repurposing 16,000 cardboard beds for a second life.

Tony Estanguet, President of the Games, highlighted that this initiative is part of Paris 2024’s dual vision to host both a spectacular and responsible event. \"From the beginning, Paris 2024 had a double vision,\" Estanguet shared with reporters. \"To have a spectacular Games but also a responsible Games and all our partners were involved in those two ambitions.\"

The concept of cardboard beds was first introduced during the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games by Japanese mattress brand Airweave, the official bedding supporter. For Paris 2024, these innovative beds are set to continue their legacy.

Motokuni Takaoka, founder and president of Airweave, explained, \"We designed these cardboard beds so that they can support up to three or four people jumping, because after winning a medal, people are very happy.\" This design ensures durability and comfort for athletes and visitors alike.

Chie Fujii, Logistics Manager of the Airweave Paris 2024 Project, added, \"We will donate to a diverse group of organizations in France. And yes, the mattress is totally washable. No bed bugs! Which will make it easy to facilitate the second life.\" This ensures that the beds can be easily cleaned and reused, promoting a sustainable model that reduces waste and benefits various communities.

This initiative not only underscores the Games' commitment to sustainability but also sets a precedent for future international events to follow. By imagining a second life for all the equipment used, Paris 2024 is paving the way for more responsible and environmentally friendly practices in the world of sports and beyond.
