In an inspiring display of resilience, China’s Zhang Zhizhen kicked off his campaign at the inaugural Hangzhou Open with a thrilling three-set victory over Kazakhstan’s Denis Yevseyev.
After withdrawing from the first round of the US Open due to a left leg injury, the 27-year-old Zhang showed strong signs of recovery. He dominated the first set 6-2, faced a fierce comeback from Yevseyev in the second set with a 1-6 score, but ultimately clinched the final set 6-4 with a decisive ace.
Yevseyev, a Paris Olympics silver medalist in mixed doubles, put up a formidable fight, setting Zhang up for an exciting next match against Italy’s Mattia Bellucci. Zhang’s victory not only marks his return to competitive tennis but also elevates the excitement surrounding the Hangzhou Open.
