China’s Weng Hongyang staged a remarkable comeback against Denmark’s Anders Antonsen at the ongoing BWF China Open in Changzho, securing a 2-1 victory to advance to the men’s singles semifinals on Friday.
In an intense match, Antonsen initially dominated, taking the first game 21-19. However, Weng rallied in the second game, leveraging strategic drop shots and powerful smashes to clinch it 21-19. The final game was a nail-biter, with the two players locked in a tight contest before Weng sealed the win 23-21, marking his first triumph over the Danish player.
Weng now faces Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie in the semifinals, following Christie's impressive 21-12 victory over China’s Lei Lanxi, who had earlier stunned Olympic champion Victor Axelsen.
On the women's side, China's third-seeded Wang Zhiyi overcame compatriot Gao Fangjie with scores of 13-21, 21-11, 21-14, setting up a semifinal encounter with Japan's Ohori Aya.
