Canada has secured its place in the Davis Cup quarterfinals for the third consecutive year, triumphing over Britain on Sunday. In a decisive performance, Denis Shapovalov overcame Dan Evans with scores of 6-0, 7-5, ensuring Canada’s advancement.
The match in Manchester saw Canada needing only one victory to eliminate the hosts and top Group D contenders. Shapovalov delivered, maintaining his composure despite a partisan crowd of around 15,000 fans. Celebrating his win, Shapovalov enjoyed some ice cream on the court.
\"It definitely wasn't easy to play against so many Britons,\" said Shapovalov. \"I've experienced it in the past as well… I just tried to stay focused, tried to stay in my bubble and tried to stay ahead as much as I could because I could feel Dan getting pumped up and the crowd getting pumped up. It was definitely starting to turn, so I'm very happy I was able to get it done in straight sets.\"
Meanwhile, the Netherlands advanced to the next stage despite a narrow defeat by defending champions Italy, highlighting the competitive spirit of this year's Davis Cup.
