China’s Coach Promises Comeback Against Saudi Arabia in AFC Qualifier

China is set to host Saudi Arabia in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup Asian Football Confederation (AFC) qualifier match this Tuesday in Dalian, Liaoning Province. Following a staggering 7-0 defeat to Japan last week, head coach Branko Ivankovic is determined to lead his team to redemption.

At a press conference on Monday, Ivankovic emphasized the team's readiness to bounce back. \"After four days, all our players have recovered from the loss physically and mentally,\" he stated. \"We have to bottom out and restore our form as soon as possible. This group is very difficult, and we need to try our best to get better results tomorrow.\"

Saudi Arabia has long been a dominant force in Asian football, maintaining a strong track record against China. The last victory for China over Saudi Arabia dates back to a 2015 AFC Asian Cup group game held in Australia.

Ivankovic highlighted Saudi Arabia's prowess, noting their multiple World Cup qualifications and their impressive performance in the 2022 tournament, where they defeated Argentina. He also praised Saudi head coach Roberto Mancini for leading Italy to win Euro 2020, labeling him "a coach of champions." Ivankovic stressed the importance of solid defense and balanced performance to overcome the challenge.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is also eager for a win, having been held to a 1-1 draw by Indonesia in their first group match. The group’s competitiveness continues with upcoming matches between Bahrain and Japan, and Australia and Indonesia. Bahrain's unexpected 1-0 victory over Australia places them second in Group C, trailing Japan only by goal difference.

As the teams gear up for Tuesday's matches, all eyes will be on how China manages to rebound and secure a favorable position in the quest for the 2026 World Cup.
