Aussie Duo Purcell & Thompson Triumph in U.S. Open Men’s Doubles

Australian duo Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson have redeemed themselves after their heartbreaking loss in the Wimbledon finals by clinching the men's doubles title at the U.S. Open. The seventh-seeded Aussies overcame German pair Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz with a scoreline of 6-4, 7-6(4) in a thrilling final on Saturday.

Purcell and Thompson, determined to erase their Wimbledon final disappointment where they failed to convert three match points, showcased their resilience by holding onto three championship points in New York. The German team made a strong push in the second set, but the Aussies remained steadfast.

\"Grand Slam champion, that's got a great ring to it, especially after the heartbreak at Wimbledon,\" Thompson remarked during the trophy presentation. \"It got a little bit tense there at the end with match points. I thought 'I can't do it again' but we stuck with it and we got there.\"

This victory marks a historic moment as Purcell and Thompson become the first all-Australian team to win the U.S. Open men's doubles title since Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde in 1996. Their journey wasn't easy; they faced match points in the second round but fought back to secure the title.

The second set was particularly intense, with the Aussies breaking early to take a 3-2 lead. Despite the German team's brief resurgence, Purcell and Thompson held firm, eventually winning the tiebreak after coming back from 3-1 down to close it out on their third championship point.

For Purcell, this is his second Grand Slam doubles title, having previously triumphed at Wimbledon in 2022 alongside Matthew Ebden. For Thompson, it's his first Grand Slam doubles title, marking a significant milestone in his career.
