Ostapenko & Kichenok Win First US Open Doubles Title Without Dropping a Set

In a stellar performance at the U.S. Open, Jelena Ostapenko and Lyudmyla Kichenok clinched their first Grand Slam doubles title without dropping a single set. The dynamic duo triumphed over Zhang Shuai and Kristina Mladenovic in straight sets on Friday, marking a significant milestone in their careers.

The match kicked off with Ostapenko's powerful forehand winner, breaking Zhang Shuai's serve and opening a one-point lead. Kichenok solidified their advantage by finding the net on her serve, leaving Zhang and Mladenovic trailing 4-3. Despite Zhang's efforts, her struggles on serve continued, allowing Ostapenko and Kichenok to secure the first set 6-4.

In the second set, Mladenovic of France managed to land a crucial break to start, but the momentum swiftly shifted. After a decisive smash at the net, Ostapenko and Kichenok took a commanding 5-3 lead. Although Ostapenko momentarily kept the contest alive with a net play on match point, she ultimately closed out the match with a final score of 6-4, 6-3.

The victory not only earned them their first Grand Slam title as a team but also showcased their exceptional chemistry on the court. Reflecting on the win, Zhang attributed her team's loss to limited playing time with Mladenovic, noting that their partnership had only played three matches together in Toronto. "We need to see that we are progressing as we have a low ranking and are unseeded. Unlike other pairs who have partnered for at least a year, or even three to four years, we haven't cooperated for a long time," Zhang explained.

Mladenovic expressed her satisfaction with their performance and optimism for the future. "I think we both respect each other very much and I appreciate her so much. I think she is an amazing player and I am so happy we share the court together and play together now," she said. She added, "For the Grand Slam, we are back together and I think it was an amazing result. Hopefully, better luck next time and we can win more trophies."

Ostapenko and Kichenok's triumph at the U.S. Open sets the stage for more successes in upcoming tournaments, as they continue to build on their impressive partnership.
