The encounter marked a significant turnaround from their previous meeting at the Mubadala Citi DC Open in early August, where Wang fell to Azarenka 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-3. This time, Wang showcased remarkable resilience, overcoming an early setback in the first set after being broken in the fourth game. She capitalized on two break points to take the first set 6-4.
Azarenka fought back fiercely in the second set, breaking Wang’s serve early and extending her lead to 5-3. Despite Wang earning four break points in the ninth game, she couldn't convert them, resulting in a 6-3 loss of the set. However, the determination didn't wane as Wang dominated the decisive third set, building a commanding 4-0 lead. Although Azarenka managed a break in the fifth game, Wang maintained her momentum, ultimately winning the set 6-1 and the match.
Reflecting on her victory, Wang stated, \"We get to the third set and I know I need to play very, very focused.\" Looking ahead, she is set to face the No. 26 seed, Paula Badosa of Spain, for a spot in the quarterfinals.
