Paris 2024: A Turning Point for Paralympics, Says IPC President

The Paris 2024 Games are set to redefine the Paralympic Movement, according to Andrew Parsons, President of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

On the eve of the Opening Ceremony, Parsons highlighted the significant advancements and ambitious plans that Paris 2024 brings to the Paralympics. With over 1.75 million tickets sold before the August 28 start, enthusiasm is palpable as the Games prepare to run until September 8.

\"The Paralympic movement has become more relevant than ever,\" Parsons stated. He praised the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee for their innovation, suggesting that the Games will mark a distinct 'Before Paris' and 'After Paris' era for Paralympic sports.

In a nod to the city's inclusive spirit, the curtain raiser for the Paralympics will grace the iconic Champs-Elysees and Place de la Concorde, echoing the Olympic Opening Ceremony held on the River Seine. Parsons described Paris's embrace of the Paralympic Movement as a \"gigantic hug\" to the athletes, highlighting the city's commitment to diversity.

\"It's like the city of Paris is giving this gigantic hug to our athletes, embracing the Paralympic Movement. This is very special because it's like: 'Look, we talk about 4,400 athletes with disability, but you're part of what we are as a city, because we are a diverse city',\" Parsons explained.

The anticipation surrounding the Paralympics is further fueled by the performance of the French team, which boasts 237 athletes. Parsons emphasized the importance of early victories to maintain the momentum and enthusiasm.

\"We hope France can win a couple of medals, especially in the very first days, it's important,\" added the 47-year-old Brazilian.

As the Paralympics unfold against the backdrop of a new government formation in France and the start of the school year, Parsons remains optimistic. He reflected on the positive feedback from the Olympic Opening Ceremony and expressed eagerness for a similarly inspiring Paralympic debut.

\"After the Olympics and seeing what has happened here, we can't wait for the Opening Ceremony. It was incredible. People just happy and proud, and this is what we want to see during the Paralympics,\" he concluded.
