Zheng Qinwen Faces Tough Challenge at US Open Opening Match

The US Open kicks off on August 26 with an exciting first-round clash between China’s Zheng Qinwen and the rising American star, Amanda Anisimova.

Zheng Qinwen, the tournament’s No. 7 seed, enters the match with little rest following her gold medal win at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris and a recent bout of the flu during the Cincinnati Open. Despite these challenges, Zheng is determined to showcase her skills on the grand stage.

Opposing her is Amanda Anisimova, ranked 49th in the world. Anisimova earned her spot at the US Open by triumphing in the Wildcard Challenge and demonstrated exceptional form at the Canadian Open. The 22-year-old knocked out several seeded players, including Daria Kasatkina and Aryna Sabalenka, before falling to Jessica Pegula in the final. Her aggressive baseline play and powerful groundstrokes make her a formidable opponent for Zheng.

This match-up promises high-energy tennis as both players aim to advance in the tournament. Additionally, ten players from the Chinese mainland are competing at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, many of whom face strong opponents in the early rounds.

Notable first-round matches include Wang Qiang taking on Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova and Wang Yafan challenging Greece’s ninth-seeded Maria Sakkari. On the men's side, Chinese players Zhang Zhizhen, Shang Juncheng, and Bu Yunchaokete are set to face British Jack Draper, Kazakh Alexander Bublik, and Norwegian Casper Ruud, respectively.

As the tournament unfolds, fans can look forward to thrilling matches and the potential for upsets, highlighting the global talent present at the US Open.
