In an impressive display of skill and consistency, Alexander Zverev of Germany advanced to the next round at the Cincinnati Open, marking his 50th tour-level win of the 2024 season.
Zverev defeated Russia's Karen Khachanov with a decisive 6-3, 6-2 victory in the men's singles second-round match on Thursday. Despite a brief 10-minute rain delay, the 27-year-old German champion wrapped up the contest in just 78 minutes, showcasing his dominance with 16 winners to Khachanov's 9.
\"I felt well on the court. I have felt well in practice and then it is easier to bring on court,\" Zverev commented post-match. \"I didn't feel well in Canada at all, even in the few matches I won. I hope my form is getting better and better and I can play some good tennis.\"
This achievement marks the fifth time Zverev has reached at least 50 tour-level wins in a single season, having done so in 2017, 2018, 2021, and 2023. His previous triumph at the Cincinnati Open came in 2021 when he defeated Andrey Rublev of Russia 6-2, 6-3 in the final.
\"It has been a good year but I have had some very tough losses that I have had to take,\" Zverev added. \"It is about learning and improving and hopefully I can get back to a Grand Slam final and hopefully win it.\"
In other matches, Andrey Rublev showcased his prowess by eliminating China's Zhang Zhizhen with a 6-4, 6-3 win, tallying 23 winners against just five unforced errors in a swift 61-minute match.
