Kenya Rallies for Olympic Gold in Honor of Late Marathon Star

As the world eagerly anticipates the marathon at Paris 2024, set to kick off at 2 a.m. ET on August 10, Kenya stands as a beacon of resilience and determination. The men's marathon was poised to feature Kenya’s Kelvin Kiptum, who shattered the world marathon record in Chicago in 2023, making him a favorite for an Olympic medal.

Tragically, Kiptum's dreams were cut short when he was killed in a car crash in February 2024. His untimely passing has left a profound impact on the Kenyan running community and fans worldwide.

In the wake of this loss, Benson Kipruto, who finished second to Kiptum in Chicago, has vowed to carry forward his teammate’s legacy. Kipruto, alongside the defending Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge, has committed to doing whatever it takes to secure gold for Kenya and honor the memory of Kiptum.

The Paris marathon not only serves as a platform for athletic excellence but also as a testament to the enduring spirit of Kenyan runners who continue to inspire and lead on the global stage.
