Retired world taekwondo champion Wu Jingyu of China made a special appearance at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris. In an exclusive interview with CGTN Sports Scene's Greg Laffradi, Wu extended her heartfelt best wishes to Team China competing in taekwondo.
Wu Jingyu is revered in the taekwondo community as a two-time Olympic gold medalist, having triumphed at the 2008 Beijing Games and the 2012 London Games. Her illustrious career also boasts two World Taekwondo Championships and two Asian Games titles.
Since retiring in July 2021, Wu has remained closely connected to the sport. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) invited her to the 2024 Olympic Games, where she served as a torchbearer in the Olympic village and a member of the competition supervisory board.
Expressing her excitement, Wu stated that she will be watching the taekwondo events closely and is confident in the abilities of the Chinese athletes. She conveyed her best wishes for their success in Paris.
China has assembled a team of six athletes for the taekwondo events at the Paris Games. Competitors include Luo Zongshi, Guo Qing, Song Jie, and Zhou Zeqi in the women's 57-kilogram, 49-kilogram, 67-kilogram, and 67+kilogram categories, respectively. On the men's side, Liang Yushuai and Song Zhaoxiang will represent China in the 68-kilogram and 80+kilogram events.
