England's Judd Trump triumphed over compatriot Shaun Murphy with an 11-5 victory in the final of the Shanghai Masters on Sunday, marking his first title at the prestigious tournament.
Trump capitalized on Murphy's slow start, establishing an early 7-3 lead and achieving a break of 110, his 10th century in this year's Shanghai Masters. Although Murphy managed to score two centuries later in the match, his efforts were insufficient to overturn Trump's commanding performance.
\"This is one of the top five events of the season, so to win this is an amazing start to the season,\" Trump commented after his victory. \"I would like to replicate what I did last season and win close to maybe five or more events this season. I couldn't have dreamed of a better start.\"
Trump navigated a challenging path to secure his first title of the 2024-25 season, including a notable semifinal win against seven-time world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan.
Reflecting on the enthusiastic support, Trump added, \"The age of the crowd in China is so much younger than the rest of the world. I always enjoy playing in front of a fanbase where I can inspire the next generation. I think that is why my record in China is so good.\"
Murphy expressed his disappointment in a video posted on Instagram, stating, \"It wasn't to be in the final of the Shanghai Masters unfortunately. Very disappointed to lose, of course. No one likes to lose. I'm bitterly disappointed. You just can't make as many mistakes as I did against somebody of Judd's class and get away with it. I made more unforced errors in the first session in that match than I've made all week. Played some really good snooker here in Shanghai. I'm disappointed to have my worst session just at the most important time.\"
