Derrick White Takes Kawhi Leonard’s Spot on Team USA for Paris 2024

Derrick White of the Boston Celtics has been selected to join Team USA for the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, taking over the roster spot previously held by two-time NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard.

USA Basketball announced the change on Wednesday, stating that Leonard decided to withdraw to focus on preparing for the upcoming NBA season. Despite ramping up for the Olympics with strong practices in Las Vegas, Leonard and his teams felt it was in his best interest to prioritize his career.

White, known for his versatility and strong defensive skills, steps into the shoes of the accomplished Leonard, who had made 68 appearances for the Clippers in the current NBA season, averaging 23.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. Leonard’s season was cut short by a right knee injury, limiting him to only two postseason games where the Clippers were eliminated by the Dallas Mavericks in the first round.

As Team USA gears up for the Paris Games, White brings fresh energy and determination to the national squad, aiming to build on the legacy of past American basketball teams. Fans and fellow athletes alike will be watching closely to see how White contributes to Team USA’s quest for Olympic glory.
