Dramatic Penalty Shootout Sees Uruguay Advance Over Brazil in Copa America

In a nail-biting encounter at the Copa America 2024 quarterfinals in Las Vegas, Uruguay emerged victorious over Brazil with a 4-2 win in the penalty shootout, following a goalless draw in regular time.

Uruguay's formidable defense kept Brazil's potent offense at bay throughout the 90 minutes, despite the challenge of playing with 10 men after Nahitan Nandez received a red card in the 73rd minute. This disciplined defensive display set the stage for an intense shootout.

The shootout began with Uruguay's Fede Valverde confidently placing his shot into the bottom-left corner, outmaneuvering Brazil's goalkeeper Alisson. Brazil's first attempt by Eder Militao was thwarted by Uruguayan goalkeeper Sergio Rochet, giving Uruguay an early lead.

Rodrigo Bentancur extended Uruguay's advantage with a well-placed shot that Alisson couldn't stop, making it 2-0. Brazil fought back as Andreas Pereira scored, followed by Giorgian de Arrascaeta slotting Uruguay's third goal, bringing the score to 3-1.

Despite Brazil's efforts to stay in the game, including Gabriel Martinelli's successful penalty, Manuel Ugarte sealed the victory for Uruguay with a decisive shot that left Brazil no chance to advance. Uruguay's triumph paves their way to the semifinals of the tournament.
