Wang Xinyu Becomes Fifth Player from Chinese Mainland to Advance at Wimbledon

At the Wimbledon Championships, Wang Xinyu of the Chinese mainland triumphed over Bulgaria's Viktoriya Tomova with scores of 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-0 in a thrilling women's singles first-round match held at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Tuesday.

This victory marks Wang's second consecutive advancement to the second round at this prestigious grass court Grand Slam tournament. In the next round, she will face the No. 5 seed from the USA, Jessica Pegula.

While Wang Xinyu secured her spot, her compatriot Bai Zhuoxuan was defeated by Great Britain's Harriet Dart with scores of 6-4, 6-0. Overall, five players from the Chinese mainland advanced to the tournament's second round: in the women's event, Wang Xinyu, Wang Yafan, and Zhu Lin; and in the men's event, Zhang Zhizhen and Shang Juncheng.

The defending women's singles champion, Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic, was unexpectedly ousted by Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro with scores of 6-4, 6-2 on Tuesday. This marks only the second instance where a reigning women's singles titleholder has been eliminated in the first round, with the last occurrence being Steffi Graf in 1994.

In other highlights, the top seed in women's singles, Iga Swiatek of Poland, overcame Sofia Kenin of the USA with scores of 6-3, 6-4. Swiatek is set to face Petra Martic of Croatia in her upcoming match.

\"It was a solid start and not an easy draw and I am glad to have the chance to play here again,\" Swiatek said. \"You can't get slowly into a Grand Slam, you have to be ready straight away. On this surface it's not about the result, but about the progress and see if I can do better than last year.\"
