The Atlanta Hawks have made a bold move in the NBA off-season, trading their star guard, Dejounte Murray, to the New Orleans Pelicans. The deal has caught many by surprise, as Murray's departure comes at what many consider a surprisingly cheap price.
In exchange for Murray, the Hawks received a package that includes Larry Nance Jr., E.J. Liddell, Dyson Daniels, a 2025 first-round draft pick via the Los Angeles Lakers, and the least favorable of a 2027 first-round pick from either the Milwaukee Bucks or their own selection.
When the Hawks acquired Murray from the San Antonio Spurs in June 2022, they paid a hefty price, including Danilo Gallinari and multiple future first-round picks. Now, by sending Murray to the Pelicans for a variety of players and future picks that aren't highly valued, the Hawks essentially offloaded one of their key players without breaking the bank.
Larry Nance Jr., E.J. Liddell, and Dyson Daniels are solid players, but none are considered worth a first-round pick. Furthermore, teams like the Lakers, Bucks, and Pelicans have shown no clear indication of initiating a rebuild in the near future, meaning the 2025 first-round pick may not hold significant value.
Despite this, Murray has been an asset for the Hawks. He was named to the All-Defensive Second Team in 2018, made his All-Star debut in 2022, and led the league in steals that same year. Over two seasons with Atlanta, from 2022 to 2024, he averaged 21.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 6.3 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. Additionally, Murray has improved his three-point shooting, averaging 2.2 three-pointers per game at a 35.5% success rate during his time with the Hawks.
For fans and analysts, this trade raises questions about the Hawks' future strategy and the Pelicans' plans with their new acquisition. Only time will tell if this move will pay off for both franchises.
