Chen Meng Sets Ambitious Goal to Outperform Herself at Paris 2024

Chen Meng, a 30-year-old stalwart of the Chinese women's national table tennis team, is setting her sights on new heights as she prepares for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. As the oldest member of the team and the reigning singles and team champion from the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Chen is determined to surpass her previous achievements.

Her recent triumph at the Saudi Smash 2024 women's singles final in Jeddah, where she defeated compatriot Sung Yingsha, solidified her position in the national team for Paris. Prior to this victory, Chen showcased her prowess by knocking out three formidable Japanese players—Miu Hirano, Hita Hayata, and Miwa Harimoto—each known for their aggressive play styles and technical skills.

“The three Japanese players I played in Saudi, they all have their own characteristics in their style of playing,” Chen told China Media Group (CMG). “They all have good skills, play with aggression and pose serious threats. But by analyzing their game, I was able to play with a clear head.”

Building on her flawless performance in Tokyo, Chen has been focused on enhancing both her technical skills and her endurance. “Several years ago, I never prioritized improving any part of my game,” she said. “I just kept trying to do everything better. But now I am in a bigger need for better endurance. I have aged and found that I recover slower than before. I have realized that better endurance will keep me in a better form.”

Chen Meng’s dedication to self-improvement underscores her commitment to excellence. “I consider it job done every day if I can defeat myself of the day before,” she stated, highlighting her relentless pursuit of personal growth and athletic prowess. As she continues to challenge herself, fans and fellow athletes alike watch with anticipation to see what Chen will achieve in Paris.
