In a vibrant celebration of culture and sport, American visual artist Alison Saar unveiled her latest sculpture in Paris on Olympic Day. The event marked the beginning of the city's preparations for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, set to commence on July 26.
The sculpture, a centerpiece of the Olympic Art Visions project, was revealed under sunny skies with International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach and other dignitaries in attendance. The Olympic Art Visions initiative selects artists from around the world to create works inspired by the spirit of the Games and Olympic values, installing them in public spaces across host cities.
Saar's masterpiece features a striking female figure conjuring a flame, symbolizing a beacon that guides the world towards a brighter and more harmonious future. In her other hand, the figure holds olive branches, representing peace and reconciliation, while six surrounding chairs invite viewers to sit together, reflecting the diversity of cultures and shared humanity.
\"Sport, much like art, is about capturing the hearts and minds of people with inspirational accomplishments,\" Bach remarked during the unveiling. \"Thank you, dear Alison, for your contribution to blend sport and culture in such a magnificent way. This is also what the Olympic Games are about – to bring all the different cultures of the world together in a peaceful competition and foster dialogue.\"
\"Salon rises from our past histories, representing our present and the urgent need for peace and dignity for all,\" Saar explained. \"A female figure sits at the center of the work, holding a flame that illuminates our path towards a brighter future and olive branches that symbolize peace. Encircled by six chairs, she invites us to sit together, embracing the diversity of cultures and our common human experiences.\"
