In a thrilling upset, China’s Zhang Zhizhen defeated third seed Daniil Medvedev with a score of 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(5) to advance to the quarterfinals of the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle, Germany on Wednesday.
Zhang, ranked No. 1 in the Chinese mainland, showcased his resilience by overcoming a challenging third-set tiebreak. Trailing 3-5 in the tiebreaker, he rallied four consecutive points to secure his second Top 5 victory, following his win over Casper Ruud at last year’s U.S. Open.
Reflecting on his performance, Zhang said, \"A really tough match. Last time I lost a third-set tie-break [in Stuttgart last week]. And today again, a third-set tie-break. I was thinking, 'Okay, it's time. The perfect moment to get revenge.' I'm super happy that today I handled it to the end,\" as quoted by the ATP official website.
Looking ahead, Zhang is set to face Christopher Eubanks of the United States, who recently caused an upset by defeating defending champion Alexander Bublik 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-3.
