Last-Minute Hero: Conceicao’s Goal Secures Portugal’s Win at Euro 2024 Opener

In a dramatic start to Euro 2024, Portugal emerged victorious against the Czech Republic with a last-minute goal by substitute Francisco Conceicao, sealing a thrilling 2-1 win.

Coming onto the pitch in the 90th minute, Conceicao made an immediate impact, finding the back of the net in the 92nd minute after Czech goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek couldn’t stop his shot. The Porto winger capitalized on a deflection from Robin Hranac, sending the ball past the left post to secure the win.

\"The players that came off the bench showed that the team has a lot of options,\" Portugal coach Roberto Martinez remarked, praising his team's depth and resilience.

The victory marks a significant moment for the Conceicao family, almost 24 years after Francisco’s father, Sergio Conceicao, scored a hat trick to oust defending champions Germany at Euro 2000.

While Cristiano Ronaldo made history by becoming the first player to appear in six European Championship tournaments, the 39-year-old star couldn’t extend his record of 14 goals in his 26th tournament appearance.

Adding to the lineup's milestones, 41-year-old defender Pepe became the oldest player to participate in the tournament. However, his experience saw limited action as the reigning champions dominated possession and opportunities throughout the match.
