Two of the world's leading women’s singles tennis players, Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus and Ons Jabeur of Tunisia, have announced they will not be participating in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Sabalenka, currently ranked third in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) world rankings, shared her decision on Monday. \"It's too much for the scheduling and I made the decision to take care of my health,\" Sabalenka explained. \"I prefer to have a little rest to make sure, physically and health-wise, I'm ready for the hardcourts. I'll have a good preparation before going to the hardcourt season. I feel that this is safer and better for my body.\"
Sabalenka has had a remarkable season, defending her Australian Open title in January and reaching the quarterfinals at the French Open in June. Currently, she is in Germany preparing for the Wimbledon Championships set to take place in July, which precedes the Olympics.
Ons Jabeur’s decision mirrors Sabalenka’s commitment to their personal health and professional schedules. Their absence will undoubtedly impact the competitive landscape of women’s tennis at the Paris Games, where they were expected to be strong contenders.
The 2024 Paris Olympics promises to be a thrilling event, but the withdrawal of these top-tier athletes highlights the challenges athletes face in balancing rigorous competition schedules with personal well-being.
