The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is set to vote next month on creating a new Olympic Esports Games, aiming to recognize gamers worldwide as top achievers. President Thomas Bach announced the initiative on Friday, highlighting the IOC's commitment to embracing the digital revolution.
For several years, the IOC has explored opportunities within the esports arena, establishing a dedicated commission to guide its efforts. In 2021, the organization introduced the Olympic Virtual Series, a pilot program in esports, laying the groundwork for this ambitious proposal.
“With the creation of Olympic Esports Games, the IOC is taking a major step forward and is keeping up with the pace of the digital revolution,” Bach stated at a news conference. “We are very excited how enthusiastically the esports community represented in our Esports Commission has engaged with this initiative. This is further proof of the attractivity of the Olympic brand and the values it stands for.”
The proposal, developed by the IOC executive board, will be voted on during their session at the upcoming Paris Olympics next month. A potential host city for the inaugural Olympic Esports Games is already under consideration.
Bach also mentioned that a new structure would be established within the IOC to manage the Esports Games, distinct from the organizational and financial frameworks of the traditional Olympic Games. This initiative is part of the IOC’s ongoing efforts to connect with younger audiences, as the traditional fan base for the Olympics continues to age.
