Lakers Target UConn’s Dan Hurley for Head Coach Position

The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly in talks with University of Connecticut (UConn) head coach Dan Hurley as they search for a new team leader, according to a recent report by The Athletic.

Following their elimination by the Denver Nuggets with a 4-1 defeat in the Western Conference first-round playoffs, the Lakers decided to part ways with coach Darvin Ham. As the team considers several candidates for the vacant position, names like ESPN broadcaster JJ Reddick and New Orleans Pelicans associate head coach James Borrego are also on the shortlist.

Dan Hurley, who has been at the helm of UConn since March 2018, has led the Huskies to back-to-back NCAA Division I Tournament titles in 2023 and 2024. His impressive track record has caught the attention of the Lakers, who are seeking to revitalize their coaching strategy.

Last year, Hurley signed a six-year, $32.1 million contract with UConn, which includes two buyout clauses. Should he choose to leave for another college head-coaching position, the buyout would amount to $7.5 million. If Hurley decides to make the jump to the NBA, the buyout would be $1.875 million.

The potential move highlights the Lakers' commitment to bringing proven leadership to the team, aiming to turn their recent playoff disappointment into future success.
