In a nail-biting encounter in Shenyang, China managed to salvage a 1-1 draw against Thailand in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Thursday.
China entered the match second in Group C with seven points, three ahead of Thailand, under the guidance of coach Branko Ivankovic. The hosts were eager to secure a spot in the final Asian qualifying stage.
The game took an early turn in the 20th minute when Thailand's Supachok Sarachat headed in a goal off a precise cross by Supachai Chaided. China's response was swift, with A Lan nearly leveling the score just two minutes later, but his strike hit the post. Fei Nanduo's follow-up was saved by Thailand's goalkeeper.
Coach Ivankovic made a strategic substitution in the 28th minute, bringing on 21-year-old Behram Abduweli in place of Gao Tianyi. Thailand continued to press, firing ten shots and twice hitting the woodwork in the first half.
The second half saw more drama as Chinaโs Fei Nanduo missed a crucial penalty following a handball by Kritsada Kaman. However, the breakthrough came in the 79th minute when Behram, on his international debut, volleyed home a headed pass from Zhu Chenjie after a free kick from Xie Pengfei.
Despite several late attempts to find a winner, China couldn't secure the victory. Ivankovic reflected on the match, praising the young talents like Behram, Xie Wenneng, Wang Zhenao, and Xu Haoyang for their performances while acknowledging the missed penalty's impact on the team's momentum.
Thailand's coach, Masatada Ishii, also expressed his team's frustrations, noting the missed opportunities. Meanwhile, South Korea dominated their match against Singapore with a 7-0 victory, ensuring their place as group leaders.
Looking ahead, China faces South Korea next Tuesday and must secure at least one point to advance to the final qualifying stage. Ivankovic remains optimistic, emphasizing the team's determination to advance.
