In a stunning display of speed and endurance, Beatrice Chebet has etched her name in athletics history by breaking the women's 10,000m world record at the Prefontaine Classic.
Chebet, a two-time world championships medallist in the 5,000m and a cross-country world champion, ventured beyond Kenya for the first time to compete in a 10,000m race. Though she entered the race without the grand ambition of setting a world record, her performance surpassed all expectations.
The spotlight was on Ethiopia's Gudaf Tsegay, the favorite after her remarkable 5,000m world record during the Diamond League finals in September. However, Chebet not only kept pace with Tsegay but also outperformed her, crossing the finish line with an astounding time of 28 minutes and 54.14 seconds.
With this achievement, Chebet became the first woman to break the 29-minute barrier in the 10,000m event, smashing the previous record of 29:01.03 set by Ethiopian athlete Letesenbet Gidey in 2021.
This historic victory not only highlights Chebet's exceptional talent and determination but also sets a new benchmark in women's long-distance running, inspiring athletes and fans around the world.
