FIFA World Cup champion midfielder Toni Kroos of Germany has announced that he will retire from international football after this year's UEFA European Championship, bringing a decade-long chapter of his career to a close.
The 34-year-old star shared the news on Tuesday through his Instagram account, expressing gratitude to his fans and teammates. \"After 10 years, at the end of the season this chapter comes to an end,\" Kroos wrote. \"I would particularly like to thank everyone that welcomed me with an open heart and trusted me. But especially I would like to thank you, dear Madridistas, for your affection and your love from the first day until the last one.\"
Kroos has been a cornerstone for the German national team, having won the World Cup title in Brazil in 2014. Over his international career, he has made 107 appearances, scored 17 goals, and provided 21 assists in various competitions. Although he initially retired from international play in July 2021, Kroos returned in February to participate in Euro 2024, which kicks off on June 14.
Germany is set to compete in Group A alongside Switzerland, Scotland, and Hungary in this year's European Championship. The national team boasts three European titles, with their latest victory dating back to 1996.
As Euro 2024 approaches, fans and teammates alike reflect on Kroos's significant contributions to German football and anticipate one last memorable tournament before his retirement from the international stage.
