IOC Announces Record-Breaking Refugee Team for Paris 2024 Olympics

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has unveiled its largest refugee team yet, featuring 36 athletes who will compete in the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, France. This marks the third occasion that a refugee team will grace the Olympic stage, following their debut in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and their subsequent participation in Tokyo 2021.

Over the years, the number of refugee athletes has steadily increased from 10 in Rio to 29 in Tokyo, and now to 36 in Paris. These resilient competitors hail from 11 different countries and regions, showcasing their talents across 12 diverse sports. Their presence underscores the Olympic spirit of unity and perseverance, transcending borders and backgrounds.

IOC President Thomas Bach expressed his admiration for the athletes, stating, \"You are an enrichment to our Olympic Community, and to our societies. With your participation in the Olympic Games, you will demonstrate the human potential of resilience and excellence.\"

Bach also highlighted the broader impact of the refugee team's participation, saying, \"This will send a message of hope to the more than 100 million displaced people around the world. At the same time, you will make billions of people around the world aware of the magnitude of the refugee crisis.\"

The inclusion of the refugee team not only celebrates the athletes' personal journeys but also brings global attention to the ongoing challenges faced by displaced populations. As the world watches Paris 2024, the refugee team's journey will inspire countless individuals and foster a deeper understanding of resilience and solidarity.
