The first torch for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris was lit in front of the iconic ruins of the Temple of Hera in Olympia, Greece, at noon on Tuesday.
Greek actress Mary Mina took on the role of an ancient high priestess, sparking the flame in the hands of competitive rower and Olympic gold medalist Stefanos Ntouskos. This symbolic act marks the beginning of the Olympic journey towards Paris.
Traditionally, the Olympic flame is ignited by the sun's rays concentrated through a concave mirror, but unfavorable weather conditions prevented this method on Tuesday. Instead, Mary Mina used a backup kindling to light the flame, ensuring the commencement of the torch relay for the upcoming Games.
