Everton has been handed a two-point deduction in the Premier League after an independent panel ruled that the club breached the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSRs). This decision, announced by the English top league on Monday, further escalates Everton's financial challenges.
The Premier League stated, \"Over a three-day hearing last month, the independent Commission heard evidence and arguments from the club in respect of a range of potential mitigating factors for its admitted breach of Β£16.6 million, including the impact of its two successive PSR charges. Having done so, the Commission determined the appropriate sanction to be a two-point deduction, taking effect immediately.\"
This latest penalty has caused Everton to drop to the 16th position in the league table, placing them just two points above the relegation zone. Earlier in November 2023, the club had already been docked six points for a previous breach of the PSR. The initial 10-point penalty was reduced to six upon appeal.
The consistent financial penalties highlight the stringent measures the Premier League is enforcing to ensure club sustainability and fair play. For Everton, this development adds pressure as they navigate their remaining season with the threat of relegation looming close.
