Houston Texans Set Stefon Diggs as Free Agent After 2024 Season

The Houston Texans have made a strategic move by altering the contract of their newly acquired wide receiver, Stefon Diggs. According to ESPN, the modification wipes out the final three years of his deal, making Diggs a free agent after the upcoming 2024 National Football League (NFL) season.

The decision traces back to the hefty cost the Texans incurred to bring Diggs aboard. The team traded a 2025 NFL Draft second-round pick (via the Minnesota Vikings) along with a 2024 sixth-rounder and a 2025 fifth-rounder from the Buffalo Bills to secure his services. At the time of the trade, Diggs was under a four-year, $104 million contract, demonstrating the Texans' commitment.

Despite the contract alteration, the Texans assured Diggs that he would receive the $22.5 million guaranteed money for the 2024 campaign. Additionally, they added the $3.5 million guaranteed for the 2025 season to his current deal, reflecting their continued trust in his abilities on the field.

However, this move comes with significant financial implications for both teams. As the Texans move Diggs into free agency, the Buffalo Bills are saddled with $31.096 million of dead money, the highest ever recorded for a wide receiver, slated for their 2024 payroll, according to ESPN.
