Joseph Schooling, Singapore’s only Olympic gold medalist, has announced his retirement from competitive swimming, marking the end of an illustrious career.
In a heartfelt post on Facebook, Schooling shared, \"Today marks the beginning of a new chapter – I will be retiring from competitive swimming. I am filled with gratitude for every experience that swimming has brought into my life. The victories were exhilarating, the defeats humbling, and together, they have forged a resilience in me that I will carry forward into my next chapter.\"
Known as \"Singapore’s Flying Fish,\" Schooling made history by winning the men's 100-meter butterfly title at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. He finished the race in 50.39 seconds, outperforming renowned swimmers Michael Phelps of the U.S., Chad le Clos of South Africa, and Laszlo Cseh of Hungary, who all posted times of 51.15 seconds in the final.
Schooling's achievements have not only brought pride to Singapore but have also inspired a generation of young athletes in the region. As he moves on to his next endeavors, Schooling leaves behind a legacy of determination and excellence in the world of competitive swimming.
