NBA Shuts Down G League Ignite Team After 2023-24 Season

The NBA has confirmed that the G League Ignite team will be shuttered after the 2023-24 season. Launched in 2020, the Ignite project brought together elite draft prospects and veterans, providing pre-draft eligible players with a platform to receive financial compensation before entering the NBA Draft.

Beyond financial benefits, the Ignite offered young talents the opportunity to gain experience by playing alongside former NBA players. Since its inception, the Ignite has contributed several players to the NBA, including top-tier picks like Jalen Green (No. 2 in 2021), Jonathan Kuminga (No. 7 in 2021), Dyson Daniels (No. 8 in 2022), and Scoot Henderson (No. 3 in 2023).

However, a significant shortcoming of the Ignite program has been its emphasis on individual performance and statistics, rather than fostering teamwork. Many NBA players from Ignite have struggled with collaboration on the court, as the team operated more as a showcase for scouting rather than a competitive organization focused on winning. While players often develop their teamwork skills in college or other team settings, Ignite fell short in this critical area, highlighting a gap in the program’s approach.
