Maurizio Sarri, the manager of Serie A's Lazio, has stepped down following a disappointing run of four consecutive losses, the club announced on Wednesday. In the interim, his assistant, Giovanni Martusciello, will take temporary charge of the first team.
The teamโs latest defeat came against Udinese, who secured a 2-1 victory at Stadio Olimpico in Rome on Monday. This loss marks Lazio's fourth straight setback, following a 1-0 home loss to AC Milan, a 2-1 away defeat to Fiorentina in Serie A, and a 3-0 rout by Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, resulting in their elimination from the tournament.
Lazio has been grappling with challenges over the past month. On January 19, Inter Milan delivered a 3-0 defeat in the Supercoppa Italiana semifinals, and the team has lost five of their last eight Serie A matches. Currently, they sit in ninth place with 40 points after 28 games in the Italian top league.
Looking ahead, Lazio faces a tough season without any trophies on the horizon, and the club might miss out on European competitions in the upcoming season.
