On November 11, 2025, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand held a phone call addressing the future of China-Canada relations.
Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, emphasized the need to build on the recent consensus reached by President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Mark Carney during their early November meeting in Gyeongju, the Republic of Korea. After seven years of setbacks, Wang said, both sides now have a clear roadmap to restore healthy, stable and sustainable ties.
He called on diplomatic and commercial departments in both capitals to deepen communication, address legitimate concerns through mutual understanding and friendly consultations, and take concrete steps to resume exchanges and cooperation across various fields.
Anand described the Gyeongju meeting as an important turning point and echoed the Chinese minister’s sentiment. Canada is ready to enhance dialogue at all levels, revitalize the strategic partnership and pursue mutually beneficial outcomes in areas including trade, consular affairs, drug control and energy.
Observers say this renewed momentum could unlock opportunities for businesses, technology sectors and cultural exchanges, reinforcing the role of China and Canada as key players in the global economy.
