At the opening of the Defence Development-2025 exhibition on Saturday, the top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) set the tone for the country's defense roadmap, calling for a steady increase in military capabilities to counter national security threats.
The showcase highlights recent milestones in modernization projects aimed at overhauling the DPRK's military structure, with a nuclear deterrent at its core. According to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the exhibit spans advanced strike systems, defense platforms, and strategic reconnaissance tools.
In his keynote speech, Kim Jong Un stressed that progress must never stall. 'Our military capabilities should be improved steadily,' he declared, underscoring the importance of consistent development.
Kim pointed to joint exercises conducted by the United States under its nuclear operations guidelines as posing 'a real and serious threat to the security of our country and others in the region.' He warned that the DPRK is closely monitoring U.S. deployments of strategic strike and reconnaissance assets on and around the Korean Peninsula.
Making clear that 'if the United States persists in the dangerous moves… the developments will spur us more powerfully to implement the relevant military and technological measures,' he signaled that the DPRK is ready to take additional steps to remove threats and maintain the balance of power.
As Defence Development-2025 continues, observers will be watching how these ambitions translate into concrete upgrades – and what this means for security dynamics across the region.
