Inside Scoop: Iran’s Top Diplomat on SCO, Israel Ceasefire & Nuclear Talks

In an exclusive interview with CGTN following the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in Tianjin this week, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi shared Tehran’s top priorities: stronger backing at the upcoming SCO Summit, a fragile ceasefire with Israel, and a fresh push to restart nuclear talks with the United States.

Championing the Global South

Araghchi underscored Iran’s emphasis on the SCO’s mission to "find the proper place of Global South countries in the international community." He praised members for condemning last month’s attacks on Iran by Israel and the United States, and he said Tehran expects full political support for the Islamic Republic of Iran at the Summit.

A Fragile Ceasefire

Describing the current pause in hostilities with Israel as "fragile," the minister said ongoing multilateral dialogue is essential to keeping the ceasefire intact and avoiding a fresh escalation.

Restarting Nuclear Negotiations

On nuclear issues, Araghchi hinted that Iran may be open to resuming talks with the US. While details remain under wraps, he suggested that a coordinated international effort through the SCO could help unlock progress—and, potentially, a path toward de-escalation.

For young global citizens navigating today’s complex diplomatic landscape, Iran’s push within the SCO highlights the search for new channels to amplify voices from the Global South—bridging security, economic, and cultural priorities across borders.
