On Monday, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) held an emergency meeting to address the U.S. military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities. During the session, Li Song, the Chinese mainland’s permanent representative to the IAEA, delivered strong criticisms of Washington’s actions.
“The United States, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, a state party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, and a nuclear-weapon state, conducted an egregious and unprecedented military strike against a non-nuclear-weapon state’s facilities under IAEA safeguards,” Li said.
He expressed serious concerns, stating that the Chinese mainland firmly opposes any violation of Iran’s sovereignty and security, including armed attacks on nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards.
According to Li, the strike violates the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and international law and risks fueling tensions across the Middle East. He emphasized that negotiation and cooperation remain the fundamental path to a lasting solution for the Iranian nuclear issue.
Li called on the international community—especially the U.S.—to work toward cooling down the situation and to promote dialogue and negotiation. He also urged all parties involved, particularly Israel, to agree to an immediate ceasefire, ensure civilian safety, and prevent further escalation.
He concluded by reaffirming support for the IAEA to perform its duties impartially and to play an active role in a political and diplomatic settlement of the crisis.
