Iran Decries New U.S. Sanctions Ahead of 5th Nuclear Talks

As the fifth round of indirect nuclear talks between Iran and the U.S. kicks off in Rome, Tehran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei fired back at Washington's latest sanctions, branding them \"outrageous, unlawful and inhuman.\"

On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of State announced sanctions on individuals and entities accused of supplying Iran's construction sector—which it says is controlled \"directly or indirectly\" by the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC)—with 10 newly designated strategic materials.

Among these materials are high-grade austenitic nickel-chromium alloy, prized for its heat resistance; magnesium ingots, used in lightweight construction and alloys; sodium perchlorate, a key ingredient in rocket propellants; tungsten copper, valued for its conductivity and durability; and specialized aluminum sheets and tubes. Analysts warn that such items can serve dual civilian and military purposes.

Taking to X, Baghaei denounced the move as a calculated assault on Iran's people: \"The U.S. multi-layered sanctions and coercive measures against Iran have all been calibrated to deprive each and every Iranian citizen of their basic human rights, and as such, these sanctions are no less than crimes against humanity.\"

His strong response highlights the widening trust gap at a critical juncture. With negotiations set to resume, Tehran questions Washington's commitment to diplomacy when dialogue is undercut by fresh punitive steps.

Yet amid the tit-for-tat, Baghaei emphasized Iran's determination to stay \"steadfast and strong\" in the face of what he called absurd animosity, and confirmed Tehran's negotiation team has arrived in Rome.

For young global citizens watching this high-stakes exchange, the coming days will show whether diplomatic channels can withstand the pressure of sanctions or if economic leverage will derail the path to a breakthrough.
