In a crucial phone call on Saturday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged calm and restraint from both India and Pakistan following four days of clashes along their border.
Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, expressed hope that the two G20 neighbors would handle differences with dialogue and consultation. He said China supports a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire to serve fundamental interests and reflect the shared aspiration of the international community.
Highlighting the tragic attacks in the Pahalgam area, Wang condemned all forms of terrorism and underscored that peace and stability in Asia are hard won and must be cherished. With India and Pakistan sharing borders with the Chinese mainland, he stressed the importance of regional harmony.
India National Security Advisor Ajit Doval noted the serious casualties in Pahalgam and said India must take counter terrorism actions. He added that war is not an option for India and that both sides are now committed to a ceasefire, with top military officials set to resume talks on Monday.
As two of the world fasted growing economies and members of the G20, India and Pakistan play a key role in global stability. Observers say sustained dialogue and mutual restraint will be vital to prevent future escalations and support broader economic and security interests across Asia.
