Xi and Putin Unite to Protect Global Trade System

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Moscow this Wednesday for a state visit and the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory in the Great Patriotic War. In talks with President Vladimir Putin, Xi pledged China stands ready to work with Russia to safeguard the global multilateral trading system and keep industrial and supply chains stable and unimpeded.

Amid unprecedented global changes, Xi highlighted how political mutual trust and strategic coordination between the two countries have injected valuable stability and positive momentum into a turbulent world. “Our long-term good-neighborly friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation have achieved stable, healthy and high-level development,” Xi said.

President Putin welcomed Xi’s visit as “highly significant,” expressing confidence it would further strengthen bilateral ties and safeguard the victorious outcomes of WWII. He praised the China-Russia partnership for its foundation of equality and respect, vowing to expand win-win cooperation regardless of temporary setbacks or incidents.

Addressing recent tariff measures by the United States, Putin called them “senseless and illegal” actions that risk backfiring on global businesses. Both leaders then signed a joint statement committing to deepen their comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era.

As two of the world’s largest economies tighten their strategic bond, markets and policymakers will watch closely for how this alliance shapes trade routes, technology flows and the future of multilateral cooperation.
