Israel Sends Troops to Southern Syria After Largest Airstrike Draws Outrage

In a bold escalation, the Israeli military confirmed on Saturday that it has deployed ground forces in southern Syria to block the entry of "hostile forces" into Druze-majority areas following its largest airstrike operation of the year.

On Friday night, 12 Israeli fighter jets struck over 20 targets across six Syrian provinces, focusing on infrastructure such as anti-aircraft cannons and surface-to-air missile launchers. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the mission aimed to "eliminate any threat in the area" and vowed to continue operations in defense of national security.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights described the bombardment as the most intense of the year, reporting strikes on Mount Qasioun, Barzeh and Harasta in Rural Damascus. While the full extent of casualties is unclear, dozens of injuries have been reported.

In a surprise move, an Israeli Air Force helicopter also delivered humanitarian aid to the Druze-majority province of Suwayda in southern Syria. According to Israeli Kan TV, the operation, approved by political leadership, has led to the evacuation of 15 Druze residents to Israel for medical treatment amid deadly clashes with pro-government forces.

Lebanese Druze leader Walid Jumblatt urged his community to reject "Israeli interference" in Syria's internal affairs, warning that true protection comes from regional solidarity and political independence.

The airstrikes have drawn swift international backlash. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and UN Special Envoy Geir Pedersen called for an immediate halt, stressing respect for Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Saudi Arabia, the Arab League, Iraq and Iran joined in condemning the strikes as violations of international law and threats to regional stability.

With tensions at a new high, analysts warn this latest flashpoint could destabilize an already fragile region. As global powers weigh their responses, young leaders and communities across the Middle East and beyond are watching closely, hopeful for de-escalation and sustainable security.
