China and Russia Strengthen Ties in Rio, Push BRICS Unity and Peace Talks

In a high-stakes meeting on Monday in Rio de Janeiro, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov gave the latest update on their countries' strategic partnership amid a shifting global landscape.

Wang Yi highlighted the unwavering trust and support between China and Russia. He stressed the importance of boosting cooperation across trade, tech and energy sectors, guided by strong strategic leadership. The meeting also underscored the growing strategic value of BRICS unity in driving global development and amplifying the voices of emerging economies.

Sergey Lavrov echoed the sentiment, emphasizing close interaction as key to navigating global challenges. He confirmed plans to coordinate major state‑level exchanges and joint commemorations, including upcoming 80th anniversary events tied to WWII milestones.

On Ukraine, Lavrov provided an update and reaffirmed Russia's readiness for unconditional peace talks, aiming to tackle root causes of the crisis. Wang Yi reiterated China's principled call for dialogue and stability, underlining Beijing's role as a mediator.

The ministers also discussed strengthening multilateral cooperation through the UN, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the G20. They shared views on Iran's nuclear program and developments on the Korean Peninsula, reflecting their joint commitment to a balanced international order.
