After a major earthquake on March 28 disrupted vital links, Myanmar has swiftly restored services on the Yangon-Mandalay railway and at Mandalay International Airport. The tremor damaged 60 embankments and 11 railway bridges along the key route, bending tracks in several areas.
In response, Myanma Railways launched urgent repair efforts, employing extensive manpower, machinery, and logistics. Safety tests were conducted with freight trains on April 3 and passenger trains on April 4. With the tracks confirmed safe, passenger services resumed on the morning of April 5, underscoring the resilient recovery of the nation’s infrastructure. Additionally, the Yangon-Pyay and Yangon-Mawlamyine routes continue to operate without interruption.
Mandalay International Airport reopened for domestic flights on April 4. By April 5, four local airlines had operated 13 flights, carrying 972 passengers—399 incoming and 573 outgoing—marking a promising return to normalcy. This coordinated effort highlights Myanmar’s commitment to restoring connectivity and bolstering confidence for travelers, businesses, and communities across the region.
