China and U.S. Ambassador Xie Feng Emphasizes Importance of Peaceful Coexistence

In a recent address at the 2025 Duke-UNC China Leadership Summit, Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng highlighted the critical need for peaceful coexistence between China and the U.S., two of the world’s major powers.

Ambassador Xie underscored that both nations have a shared responsibility to foster a long-term harmonious relationship, emphasizing that viewing each other as partners rather than rivals would benefit not only the two countries but the entire globe. \"If we choose to be each other's partner and help one another succeed, we can prosper together, with the whole world benefiting from it,\" Xie stated.

He called on the U.S. to adhere to the one-China principle and address the Taiwan issue in line with the three China-U.S. Joint Communiqués. Xie firmly opposed any moves towards \"Taiwan independence\" and urged the U.S. to halt efforts that might expand Taiwan's international presence.

Highlighting the robust economic ties, Ambassador Xie pointed out that bilateral trade between China and the U.S. surpassed $680 billion last year, with approximately 73,000 American companies investing in China. He warned that attempts to decouple or disrupt existing supply chains could have severe economic repercussions for both nations.

Addressing the issue of fentanyl-related substances, Xie noted that China was the first country to officially categorize these substances as controlled in 2019. He praised the advancements in China-U.S. counternarcotics cooperation and cautioned against leveraging this issue as a pretext for imposing tariffs, labeling such actions as counterproductive.

Concluding his speech, Ambassador Xie urged both countries to uphold their responsibilities as major global players by prioritizing peace, development, and cooperation. He advocated for rejecting hegemonism, unilateralism, and protectionism to effectively address emerging global challenges and hotspot issues.
