Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has reaffirmed Brazil's leadership of BRICS, emphasizing the group's role in promoting a multipolar world and fostering fairer global relations.
Speaking at a BRICS negotiators' meeting in Brasilia, Lula outlined key priorities for Brazil's presidency. These include enhancing global governance, advancing healthcare initiatives, spearheading climate action, facilitating trade, leveraging artificial intelligence, and promoting institutional development.
Lula called for collective efforts to promote peace and reform the multilateral security system, warning that unilateralism undermines the international order and that negotiations based on power lead to instability and conflict.
Highlighting the urgent need for healthcare cooperation in the Global South, Lula proposed a BRICS-led initiative to eliminate neglected tropical diseases. He cautioned against weakening the World Health Organization, stating that it would have severe repercussions and underscored the necessity of stronger global health governance to ensure fair access to medicines and vaccines.
On climate change, Lula urged BRICS to push for ambitious outcomes at the upcoming 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), advocating for economic growth that aligns with social and environmental justice.
Emphasizing the need to dismantle trade barriers amid rising protectionism, Lula advocated for reforms in the global financial system and called on BRICS to take a leading role in shaping global governance through the United Nations.
The president also called for coordinated action to support South Africa's G20 presidency and Brazil's leadership of COP30 scheduled for November.
