On Monday, a representative from the Chinese mainland called on the UN Security Council to take a proactive role in fostering consensus and advancing peace negotiations concerning the Ukraine crisis, marking the third anniversary of its full escalation.
Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, emphasized the importance of creating a favorable atmosphere for a negotiated settlement. \"At present, when the Ukraine issue is at a critical juncture for a negotiated settlement, we expect the international community to create a favorable atmosphere for promoting a political solution to the crisis,\" Fu stated during the Security Council meeting.
He highlighted China's expectation for the United Nations and the Security Council to constructively forge peace consensus among member states and to promote dialogue over confrontation. Fu underscored that \"the ultimate resolution of any conflict lies at the negotiation table.\" He expressed support for ongoing efforts towards peace, including the U.S.-Russia agreement to initiate talks.
Fu encouraged all parties and stakeholders to engage in peace talks at an appropriate time to achieve a just and lasting solution that addresses each other's concerns. He also urged European nations to contribute to peace by addressing the root causes of the crisis and establishing a balanced and sustainable security framework for long-term stability in Europe.
The Security Council recently adopted a resolution drafted by the United States, which calls for an immediate end to the conflict and a lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine. The resolution passed with 10 votes in favor, none against, and five abstentions from France, Britain, Denmark, Greece, and Slovenia.
