China Urges UN Security Council to Champion Peace Talks on Ukraine Crisis

As the world marks the third anniversary of the full escalation of the Ukraine crisis, a Chinese envoy has stepped forward with a call for constructive dialogue. Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, addressed the UN Security Council, emphasizing the need for a unified international effort to foster peace.

\"At present, when the Ukraine issue is at a critical juncture for a negotiated settlement, we expect the international community to create a favorable atmosphere for promoting a political solution to the crisis,\" Fu Cong stated during the meeting.

China envisions the United Nations and the Security Council playing pivotal roles in building consensus among member states. Fu highlighted the importance of advancing peace talks, noting that \"the ultimate resolution of any conflict lies at the negotiation table.\" He underscored the rising calls for a negotiated settlement and the opening window for peace.

While acknowledging that not all parties may have aligned positions, Fu advocated for dialogue over confrontation, emphasizing that talks are preferable to ongoing conflict. He expressed China's support for all peace efforts, including the U.S.-Russia agreement to initiate peace talks.

Fu encouraged European nations to contribute to peace by addressing the crisis's root causes and establishing a balanced, effective, and sustainable security framework. This, he believes, is essential for achieving long-term security and stability across Europe.

China remains committed to playing a constructive role in resolving the crisis politically, taking into account the concerns of the international community, especially those of the Global South. This commitment comes at the invitation of the parties directly involved in the conflict.

In recent developments, the Security Council adopted a U.S.-drafted resolution urging a swift end to the conflict and calling for lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine. The resolution passed with 10 votes in favor and five abstentions from France, Britain, Denmark, Greece, and Slovenia.
